Indian Railways to start three more railway stations in New Delhi by 2010

The Indian Railway Ministry, in order to ease the passenger flow at the main terminal in New Delhi is planning to come up with three more railway stations in the National Capital Territory (NCT). The new stations will come up at Anand Vihar, bordering Uttar Pradesh, Holambi Kalan in North Delhi and Bijwasan in South West Delhi, both bordering Haryana. The Indian Railway Ministry is planning to inaugurate these stations before the Commonwealth Games, which is scheduled for October, 2010. Apart from this, the government has invited bids for the face lift and restructuring of the existing New Delhi railway stations, which will start from the sixth of this month. As part of the expansion plans, four new platforms will be added to the New Delhi railway station which currently has 12 platforms. These 26 coach length platforms will be operational by the 15th this month.

"This is part of the upgradation work of Delhi 's rail traffic before the Commonwealth Games. These railway stations will divert some traffic to the NCR and help decongest New Delhi railway station, which is overburdened with passengers. We expect these stations to be operational before the Games. The government has already sanctioned Rs.8.5 million for the upgradation of the Anand Vihar station and the land acquisition for the other two stations has already begun," said a Senior Railways official.
